The bunkers in the Prairie Bunker Data Center Park were constructed during WW II as part of the largest Naval Ammunition Depot in the country. Key reasons for the site selection were the abundance of electrical power, access to transportation and location equidistant from both coasts. During WWII, the Hastings NAD supplied 40% of all munitions used by the Navy, including 16-inch shells used by battleships in the Pacific. Large portions of the site were transferred to the US Department of Agriculture and the local community college. The remaining portion was released for sale to the public in the late 1960s. Since that time, some of the bunkers in the Prairie Bunkers Data Center Park have been used for agricultural purposes, including grain storage. The bunkers are in near-pristine condition and certified as free of any contamination.
